Community-Based Prosecution

The Madison County Prosecutor’s Office has implemented a community-based prosecution approach as part of our law enforcement duties. The main role of the prosecutor is to investigate, charge and then prosecute crimes committed in our community. This is necessarily a REACTIVE approach to crime prevention. Community based prosecution is a method for our office to 1) PROACTIVELY work to prevent crime before it happens; and 2) ensure that our reactive approach is serving the community in the best way possible. We focus on targeted areas of the community and engage in proactive partnership with law enforcement, the community and public and private organizations. We are committed to combining our efforts with the efforts of these groups to identify community problems and to prevent crime.

We have direct interaction with community leaders and neighborhood groups. Discussion with community leaders and members of neighborhood groups is critical to more effective prosecution. This concept facilitates the exchange of information which is helpful in carrying out our duties. As a result of this direct interaction, the prosecutor’s office is also better situated to address the priorities of the community.

The Madison County Prosecutor’s Office is committed to a long-term strategy designed to maintain a successful community based prosecution approach. Ultimately, we are working towards an improved quality of life and increasing the public safety for the members of our community. If you have any suggestions, or know of a group that could benefit from a partnership with our community-based prosecution model, please contact Chief Deputy Prosecutor Steve Koester at (765) 641-9585 or email him at skoester@madisoncounty.in.gov.
